Design & Build
The Overture PM-2i combines the power and dynamic capability of EL34 pentodes with the tonal richness associated with Kondo’s valve amplifiers. Its push-pull output stage produces 32 watts per channel, providing greater flexibility with a broad range of contemporary loudspeakers.
Both the input and driver stages use direct-coupled circuits. Pure-silver foil capacitors couple the driver stage to the EL34 output tubes, while the low-impedance circuit architecture and carefully arranged internal wiring keep signal paths short.
Kondo’s CCB constant-current biasing circuit prevents the music signal from passing through the bias-adjustment controls. The custom ultralinear output transformers incorporate a dedicated third winding for negative feedback, allowing the amplifier to operate with only 3 dB of feedback.
The power supply uses choke coils and large capacitor banks, followed by separate decoupling networks for the left and right channels. Each input stage receives 500 µF of local capacitance to support headroom, channel separation and wide-bandwidth performance.
System Pairing
Four unbalanced RCA inputs accommodate a DAC, streamer, CD player and other line-level sources. Vinyl playback requires a separate phono preamplifier, such as the Kondo GE-2i, GE-7i or GE-10i, with an appropriate step-up transformer when using a low-output moving-coil cartridge.
Separate 4-ohm and 8-ohm speaker connections allow the output transformers to be matched to the loudspeaker’s nominal impedance. Its 32-watt-per-channel output makes the Overture PM-2i suitable for appropriately sensitive loudspeakers in small to medium-sized listening rooms.
Kondo notes that approximately 15 minutes of warm-up is required for the tubes to reach their nominal sound quality and operating performance.
