JA’s First Report from the LAAS from Stereophile

It is always surprising to find a pair of small speakers producing a bigger sound that you’d expect, and the tiny impeccably finished Kiso Acoustic minimonitors from Japan ($10,000/pair) in the Wynn Audio (of Canada) room were doing just that on a CD of music by Astor Piazzola. It must be admitted, however, that the speakers were definitely benefiting from some judicious boundary reinforcement in the lower frequencies. The rest of the system comprised an Einstein integrated amplifier, Metronome CD player, with a Critical Mass Systems rack and ZenSati cables.

Los Angeles Audio Show 2017 Steve’s Faves from What’s Best Forum

Surprise Of The Show

This goes to Wynn Audio which is a high end store in Toronto Canada owned by Wynn Wong

Here is the system which consisted of a small bookshelf size of Japanese speakers that was throwing an image as big as any of the bigger speakers and I have no idea how

These speakers list for $10K. Much to my surprise when I had a close up look of the rack as it appeared to be a version of mine on steroids, did in fact prove to be the new flagship of Joe Lavrencik at Critical Mass Systems. I had seen pictures of the prototype several months ago that Joe shared with me and close up and personal was even better. Wynn turns out to be the Canadian distributor for CMS and brought the very first one to the show. Even Joe who was around the corner from this room didn’t know he was there. I was also amazed that this speaker were so toed in that there should never have been a sweet spot let alone an image this life like

Hats off to you Wynn

CD/DAC: Metronome CD8S CD Player
Pre/Amp: Einstein The Amp Ultimate (Hybrid design, balanced integrated amp)
Speakers: Kiso Acoustic HB-1
Cables: ZenSati Seraphim
Rack: Critical Mass Systems Olympus

Audio Oasis! Awards for AXPONA 2017 from Positive Feedback

But boy! What a sound!

You’d hardly think that the Penaudio Serenades, which strike you as pretty compact floorstanders, could have anything like the depth of bass that I heard here. I was amazed, to tell you the truth…how could such power erupt from them. This reassured me that the Karan Acoustics electronics must be bloody potent; how else could you have speakers deal with music from the Goldmund with such total authority. The source was digital, but the Goldmund was making some truly serious music during the time I was there.

As you’ve seen from my prior comments, this wasn’t the first time that I had been gobsmacked by a room at AXPONA, but this was the most thorough bushwhacking that I experienced. CH Precision, or the big Von Schweikert or PASS Labs rooms, or the bigger GTT Audio room, or the Playback Designs room…yes, they really wowed me, each in its own way way. But this one sucker-punched me out of the blue, and at show’s end.

Wynn Wong was a very charming and pleasant person, and I could see that he was delighted that I was so amazed. Joe was chuckling, naturally…he knows that I’m looking at his new reference rack, too!

What could I say? Even there, at the very end of the show, I had to award another Audio Oasis! prize, one that was richly deserved. I hope to revisit Wynn Audio again in the near future…I need to spend more time enjoying what I heard.

AXPONA 2017: Electronics $15k and Up from The Absolute Sound

Wynn Audio introduced the new-to-the-U.S., $38k Karan Acoustics S 600 stereo amplifier that delivers 600W into 8 ohms, in addition to the $17k L Reference preamplifier with outboard power supply in a separate chassis. The Karan electronics drove $12k Penaudio Serenade Signature speakers from Finland. This room also boasted another cool introduction, albeit one outside my category: a brand-new rack from Critical Mass, the Olympus, seen in a “sneak preview” here before its official launch in Munich. Granted I’m not familiar with this new system, but I detected some remarkably immersive soundstaging, almost surround-sound-like in effect.

Montreal Audio Fest 2017 – Karan Acoustics, Goldmund, Thales, and TIDAL Audio from Part-Time Audiophile

I’ve had the privilege of hearing Wong demo systems before, and this time it was just as compelling, musical, and engaging as the last. Not only does Wong put together systems that are carefully matched, curated, and meticulously set-up, he approaches building a kit with a holistic viewpoint. From source to transducer, Wong sees a component only as good as the one which precedes it in the signal path. He is very determined to please his customer base, and seems singleminded in his purpose to deliver the best sound possible within a client’s budget, and after spending some time with him, it’s easy to see why his method is gaining a following: it works. Wong puts together systems that speak to the listener in an organic, human, and most importantly musical vocabulary.

Montreal Audio Fest 2017 Report from 6 Moons

Wynn Audio had a stable of exceptional HighEnd product at the show. The stunning Tidal Sunray flagship with the requisite caliber of support definitely hit upper echelon financial territory but as statement pieces, they define what the art of audio design can accomplish. The speakers clock in at $185’000/pr. The support pieces too were upward mobile. Names like Goldmund and Thales signified more premium product. To cite the Karan KA600 amplifier as singular example, its price is $40’000. Wynn Audio also stocks a good selection of more attainable product so that their flagship demonstrations serve to whet the appetite and inspire the soul. Both goals were intensely fulfilled.

Montreal Audio Fest 2017 Report from Stereophile

A friend who shares my tastes in hi-fi told me, on Saturday, that the system assembled by Ontario dealer Wynn Audio sounded impressive, and I soon discovered how right he was. Wynn pulled out all the stops and built a system around the enormous—and enormously attractive—Tidal Audio Sunray loudspeakers ($CDN185,00/pair), with Karan Acoustics’ S 600 (600Wpc) stereo amplifier ($CDN40,000), L Mk3 preamp ($CDN13,000), and Ph1 phono stage ($CDN20,000). Source components were a Goldmund Eidos 36U+ CD player ($48,000) and a Thales TTT Compact II turntable ($CDN18,800) with Thales Simplicity II tonearm ($CDN12,500). ZenSati Seraphim cables were used throughout. A number by the O Zone Percussion Group, with marimba, orchestral bells, snare drum, and other percussion instruments offered thunderous lows, believably crisp highs, and lots of sheer excitement and drive.

A Visit to Wynn Audio from The Audio Beat

“…The space has the character of a luxury downtown condo, even though it’s actually part of a suburban strip mall. It features two demo rooms and a small galley kitchen, which gives a homey feel. “

“…The sound is fast, clean and clear. Not to be mistaken for lean and bright, the warmth and beauty of a well-recorded cello, for example, was presented just as captured, with nothing added and nothing taken away.”

“…he has created a low-pressure, comfortable environment where any audiophile could drop by, have a listen, and simply talk audio.”

Wynn Audio’s Grand Opening in Toronto from Mono & Stereo

“Toronto’s audio world has a new player in town, and he comes with a lavish reputation which precedes him. Known for his exquisite style and taste, Wynn Wong, President of Wynn Audio draws a lot of attention wherever he goes.”

“What drew the most attention, however, is the main show room which measures 17′ x 23′, with a 11 ft. ceiling, the room made the Tidal Sunray speakers looked small. Mark Johansen of ZenSati Cables, was engaging the audience with background stories to the tunes which he was playing. He played a track with bells on the background which the audience all thought were coming from real bells, when in fact they were all electronic bells.”

TAVES 2016 – WYNN AUDIO WOWS WITH GOLDMUND, TIDAL from Part-Time Audiophile

“When the Bugatti Veyron debuted at the Toronto Auto Show in 2012, the $ 2 Million dollar price tag naturally generated a lot of buzz, it was the undisputed star of the show. If there is one system which can be described as the “Bugatti” of TAVES, it has to be Wynn Audio‘s Goldmund and Tidal system. The room is situated passed the booth exhibits, and right in front of the Sheraton Convention Center’s entrance. It is definitely the most eye-catching and most talked about room of TAVES 2016.”

“The sound was warm, musical and laid back. As they cranked up the volume, the elegant composure of the sonic image was maintained throughout the entire frequency spectrum, I could have easily listened to the system for hours without any listener fatigue.”

“Wynn Audio has undoubtedly raised the bar, and has set a higher standard for others to follow.”
